Artiva Biotherapeutics Stock Plunges 32% After Halting Lead Drug Trial

Shares of Artiva Biotherapeutics (NASDAQ: ARTV) plunged 32% on Tuesday after the company announced it was halting all further development of its lead drug candidate, AlloNK (AB-101). The decision was driven by disappointing long-term efficacy data and serious safety concerns, including a patient death in a clinical trial, prompting a major corporate restructuring.
Efficacy and Safety Concerns Trigger Halt
Artiva's decision to discontinue the program, which included a planned Phase 3 pivotal trial, came after a review of updated clinical data. The company stated that while initial data on B cell depletion and clinical response were consistent with previous findings, longer-term data showed the durability of clinical response did not meet the threshold required for continued development.
The review was also prompted by recent serious safety issues. Key events included:
- A fatal neurological event (leukoencephalopathy) in a participant in the Phase 2a basket trial. An investigator and an independent safety review assessed the event as likely related to fludarabine-associated neurotoxicity, a component of the study's treatment protocol.
- A second fatal event, which was assessed as unrelated to the study treatment.
AdFollowing notification of the first fatal event, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had asked Artiva to pause enrollment and dosing in the Phase 2a study. AlloNK was being evaluated as an allogeneic NK cell therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and other B-cell-driven autoimmune diseases.
Corporate Restructuring and Strategic Review
In the wake of the trial's termination, Artiva is implementing a drastic workforce reduction of approximately 94%. The company has engaged Leerink Partners as a financial advisor to help evaluate strategic alternatives to maximize stockholder value.
Potential options on the table include a merger, business combination, sale or licensing of assets, or a complete dissolution and liquidation of the company. As of September 30, 2026, Artiva reported having approximately $319.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and investments, a figure that will be central to any future strategic moves.
