Moderna Stock Declines on William Blair Downgrade Over Valuation Concerns

Background

Moderna Inc. (MRNA) shares slid in pre-market trading, pressured by a fresh analyst downgrade and lingering investor sentiment following recent clinical trial data. The stock was down approximately 3.0% ahead of the market open, underperforming the broader market indexes.

Analyst Downgrade Cites Valuation

William Blair downgraded Moderna to Market Perform from Outperform, pointing to significant valuation constraints. The firm's analyst, Myles Minter, noted that the stock's 545% year-to-date surge has already priced in an aggressive commercial trajectory for the company's oncology pipeline.

The downgrade is the latest in a series of cautious analyst actions. According to William Blair's sum-of-the-parts analysis, Moderna's current market capitalization implies a 70% to 75% probability of success for its cancer therapies across additional tumor types beyond melanoma. This leaves little margin of safety and makes the stock vulnerable to any disappointments. Other firms have also expressed caution, with Citi maintaining a Sell rating and an $80 price target on the stock.

Lingering Trial Data Reaction

The downgrade compounds a "sell-the-news" reaction to Moderna's recent Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial results. While the study showed a positive outcome, the 42% reduction in melanoma recurrence or death was slightly below the 49% reduction observed in the earlier Phase 2b data, tempering some investor enthusiasm.

This company-specific pressure comes as the broader market is showing modest gains, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq trading in positive territory. Investors are now looking ahead to a manufacturing facility tour scheduled for mid-November and awaiting Phase 2 data for renal cell carcinoma, which is expected by late 2026 or early 2027.
