Bitcoin Pressured by Macro Headwinds as Key $75,500 Support Level Looms

Bitcoin is facing the risk of further declines following a sharp sell-off last week, as a confluence of macroeconomic pressures sours investor sentiment for risk assets. According to digital asset investment firm Hilbert Group, renewed geopolitical tensions, concerns over an artificial intelligence equity bubble, and tightening global liquidity are creating significant headwinds for the cryptocurrency.
Price Correction and Key Technicals
Bitcoin fell 5.4% last week after touching a high of $84,800, marking five consecutive days of losses and briefly dipping below the $80,000 mark to a weekend low of $79,200. The token is currently testing a technical support zone between $78,500 and $79,500.
Jesse Marre, Senior Portfolio Manager at Hilbert, identified the $75,500 level as a critical threshold. In a market update, Marre warned that a sustained break below this point could undermine the bullish market structure that has been in place since the summer lows. To restore near-term stability, Bitcoin would need to recover above $81,400, while a move above $87,500 would be required to strengthen the case for another rally.
Broader Market Risk-Off Sentiment
The weakness in digital assets coincides with a broader retreat in financial markets as investors shed risk. According to Hilbert's October 26 report, several factors are contributing to the negative sentiment:
Ad- Geopolitical Tensions: Renewed tensions involving Iran pushed Brent crude oil prices toward $117 a barrel, stoking fears of inflation and economic disruption.
- Technology Stock Weakness: Investors are reassessing high valuations in the artificial intelligence sector, leading to a sell-off in major tech stocks. Shares of Nvidia fell 8% over the week, while Meta Platforms dropped 9%.
- Tightening Liquidity: Hilbert's analysis indicates that global liquidity conditions are deteriorating, adding pressure on assets like Bitcoin that are sensitive to capital flows.
Fed Decision and ETF Flows
Market participants are now closely watching the U.S. Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision on Wednesday. While markets are pricing in an 87% probability that the central bank will hold interest rates steady, Marre expects a "hawkish hold," where policymakers signal that a future rate increase in December remains a possibility amid persistent inflation.
Despite the price drop, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $442 million for the week. However, this figure includes a substantial $635 million in outflows on Thursday alone, suggesting to Hilbert that fund flows are largely reacting to the spot market's price movements rather than driving them. Investors will also be scrutinizing upcoming U.S. inflation and GDP data for further clues on the Fed's policy path.
