Background

Shares of Arlo Technologies (NYSE: ARLO) gained in premarket trading Tuesday after the smart home security company announced its board of directors has authorized a new stock repurchase program of up to $100 million.

Program Details

The buyback program is authorized to continue through December 31, 2028, unless it is extended or shortened by the board. Arlo stated the repurchases will be conducted through open market transactions in accordance with Rule 10b-18 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.

According to Chief Executive Officer Matthew McRae, the authorization reflects the board and management's belief that the company's shares are undervalued relative to its long-term value. McRae added that the program demonstrates a commitment to delivering shareholder value while continuing to invest in its capital allocation plan.

Market Reaction and Implications

Investors responded positively to the news, with Arlo's stock rising 4.3% in premarket trading Tuesday. Stock buyback programs are often viewed by the market as a signal of management's confidence in a company’s financial health and future prospects.

By reducing the number of shares outstanding, repurchases can also have the effect of increasing earnings per share (EPS), a key metric for investors. The timing and total number of shares repurchased will depend on factors such as market conditions, trading prices, and the economic cost, according to the company's announcement.
