Norsk Hydro Placed on J.P. Morgan's Negative Watch List Over LNG Cost Risks

J.P. Morgan has placed Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro on a "Negative Catalyst Watch" ahead of its upcoming capital markets day, warning that volatile energy costs could materially impact future earnings. The bank's concerns center on the company's Alunorte refinery in Brazil, which is currently reliant on the spot market for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Alunorte's Energy Headwinds
Norsk Hydro began purchasing spot LNG cargoes for its Alunorte facility on August 11 following a supply disruption from its contracted provider, according to an earlier company statement. J.P. Morgan analysts noted that if Norsk Hydro is unable to secure a long-term gas contract and remains exposed to spot prices, its 2027 EBITDA could fall to NOK 28.28 billion, a figure 15% below the current Bloomberg consensus forecast.
The bank highlighted the recent surge in energy prices as a primary concern. Norsk Hydro's fourth-quarter guidance, which projected an EBITDA impact of $90 million to $110 million, was based on an early October spot LNG price of approximately $26 per million British thermal units (mmBtu). Prices have since climbed around 20% to roughly $33/mmBtu, which J.P. Morgan estimates could add another 6% downside risk to 2027 consensus EBITDA.
Revised Forecasts and Price Target
Reflecting these heightened risks, J.P. Morgan has lowered its December 2027 price target for Norsk Hydro to NOK 78 from a previous NOK 91. The bank also cut its own 2027 EBITDA forecast for the company by 9%, placing its estimate 10% below the market consensus.
AdJ.P. Morgan's "Negative Catalyst Watch" is a short-term indicator of caution ahead of a specific event—in this case, Norsk Hydro's Capital Markets Day on November 25. The bank's analysis suggests every $5 change in the LNG price per mmBtu impacts Norsk Hydro's annual EBITDA by approximately NOK 1.4 billion.
Broader Business Risks
Beyond the immediate LNG issue, the analysts pointed to other potential challenges for the aluminum producer.
- North American Extrusions: Management previously lowered its 2026 demand forecast for this division, and J.P. Morgan sees a risk that the 2030 EBITDA target for the unit could be reduced again.
- Energy Division: The company is also facing heavier maintenance schedules in its Energy segment in 2027.
Despite these headwinds, J.P. Morgan noted that Norsk Hydro's balance sheet remains strong, with net debt forecast to be NOK 17 billion at the end of 2026, well below the company's through-cycle target of NOK 25 billion.
