Background

Global sovereign bond yields surged to multi-year highs on Thursday, driven by a dual blow of hawkish central bank action in Europe and surprisingly strong inflation data from the United States. The moves reflect a rapid repricing of interest rate expectations as markets anticipate a prolonged period of restrictive monetary policy to combat persistent inflation.

European Yields Rise on ECB Rate Hike

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised its benchmark deposit rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%, pushing borrowing costs across the eurozone higher. The decision was aimed at curbing inflation driven by elevated energy prices, with August consumer prices in the region rising 3.3% year-over-year.

The rate hike immediately impacted German government bonds, a benchmark for the bloc:

  • Germany's policy-sensitive 2-year yield rose 1.9 basis points to 3.072%, remaining near its highest level of the year.
  • The benchmark 10-year yield climbed 0.8 basis points to 3.457%, hovering near highs not seen since 2011.
  • The 30-year yield increased by 1.3 basis points to 3.911%, also touching a 2011 high.

Money markets are now pricing in a greater than 90% probability of another 25-basis-point rate hike from the ECB before the end of the year, according to Investing.com. This marks a significant shift from sentiment earlier in the summer when many investors anticipated a pause in the central bank's tightening cycle.

Hotter-Than-Expected US PPI Fuels Fed Bets

Adding to the global bond sell-off, a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed wholesale inflation accelerated more than anticipated in August. The Producer Price Index (PPI) rose 5.4% from a year earlier, exceeding forecasts of 5.3% and picking up pace from July's 4.8% reading.

The data, which indicates rising costs are moving through the supply chain, triggered an immediate sell-off in U.S. Treasuries:

  • The 2-year Treasury yield rose 2.5 basis points to 4.497%, hitting a new high for the year.
  • The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed 2.7 basis points to 4.909%, its highest level since 2023, marking its sixth consecutive day of gains.
  • The 30-year Treasury yield jumped 5.8 basis points to 5.339%, signaling growing investor concern about long-term inflation.

Market Focus Shifts to US CPI

Following the ECB's decision and the U.S. PPI report, investor attention is now firmly fixed on the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, due Friday. The report will be a critical piece of information for the Federal Reserve ahead of its policy meeting on September 15-16.

Currently, fed funds futures markets indicate traders see a 62% probability of the Fed implementing another 25-basis-point interest rate hike at its next meeting, according to data cited by Investing.com.
