Sterling Slips as Dollar Strengthens Ahead of Fed Decision and UK Budget

The British pound traded lower against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, weighed down by a firmer greenback as investor focus returned to macroeconomic fundamentals ahead of key central bank policy decisions and the release of the UK's budget.
Market Snapshot
As of 06:17 ET (10:17 GMT), the pound sterling was trading down 0.18% against the dollar at $1.3283, according to market data. The euro also showed weakness, inching down 0.01% to $1.1125, hovering near its lowest levels of the year.
The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, was reportedly edging back toward its yearly highs around 102.35, per HSBC data. The move came as receding fears of an AI-driven equity sell-off allowed currency markets to refocus on themes supportive of the dollar.
Central Banks Take Center Stage
Investor caution is mounting ahead of the conclusion of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting later on Wednesday. Analysts expect the central bank's message to lean hawkish as it focuses on monetary stability, a stance that would likely keep the dollar supported.
Ad"A little stability on the AI side has allowed the FX market to re-focus on the clearer and more present danger of higher energy, higher inflation and the central bank response," said Chris Turner, global head of markets at ING. He added that a move in the dollar index through 102.50 could open up a path to 103.00.
UK Budget and European Headwinds
In the UK, the government is set to release its budget later in the day. However, analysts at ING do not expect it to significantly influence the Bank of England's monetary tightening prospects, though any surprises on minimum wage adjustments could cause ripples in money markets.
Meanwhile, the euro remains under pressure from broad dollar strength and internal factors. A recent European Central Bank lending survey revealed tightening credit conditions and an unexpected decline in corporate loan demand, adding to economic headwinds ahead of the ECB's press conference on Thursday.
