Sterling Slips Against Stronger Dollar Ahead of Fed Decision and UK Budget

The British pound weakened against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, as traders positioned themselves for a pair of high-stakes events: the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision and the UK's budget announcement. The move was primarily driven by broad-based dollar strength as investors anticipated a hawkish stance from the U.S. central bank.
Dollar Gains on Hawkish Fed Outlook
The U.S. dollar found firm support as investors trimmed short positions ahead of the Federal Reserve's Wednesday meeting, according to analysts at HSBC. Market focus has returned to what strategists at ING described as a "supportive backdrop of a hawkish Federal Reserve and high energy prices."
In a note to clients, ING FX strategist Francesco Pesole stated that recent comments from Fed officials reiterating their commitment to fighting inflation have reinforced a "structural floor for the dollar." Investors are also watching for a slate of U.S. economic data later on Tuesday, including consumer confidence and durable goods orders, though analysts believe it is unlikely to alter the Fed's tone.
Sterling Faces Twin Event Risks
For the pound, this week is defined by two major sources of potential volatility. While the Fed's decision is the primary global focus, the UK's domestic fiscal policy is also under intense scrutiny.
AdChancellor John Healey is set to deliver the UK Budget on Wednesday, with markets expecting a relatively subdued statement. Analysts suggest this creates a "low hurdle for a negative surprise," especially as previous budgets have delivered larger-than-anticipated market moves. However, reports of a potential £20 billion investment plan over five years could mitigate downside risks for the currency. Separately, money markets are currently pricing in a 25-basis-point interest rate hike from the Bank of England to 4% in November.
Key Currency Levels
As of early European trading, sterling was down 0.19% against the dollar at $1.3317. The euro also slipped amid the dollar's renewed strength.
Analysts at HSBC identified technical support for the GBP/USD pair at $1.3175 and resistance at $1.3461. The LSEG consensus forecast, cited by HSBC, projects the pair will end the fourth quarter near the $1.33 level.
