SK hynix ADRs Surge on Record Earnings, KRW 100 Trillion Shareholder Return Plan

American depositary receipts of SK hynix Inc. (ADR: HXSCL) surged in pre-market trading after the South Korean memory chip maker posted its strongest quarterly results in its history, announced a landmark shareholder return program, and confirmed the mass production of its next-generation AI memory chips.
Record-Breaking Financial Performance
For the third quarter of 2026, SK hynix reported record-breaking financial results that significantly surpassed analyst expectations. The company's announcement detailed:
- Revenue: KRW 104.62 trillion, the first time a single quarter has exceeded the KRW 100 trillion mark.
- Operating Profit: KRW 83.33 trillion, representing a massive 632% year-over-year increase.
- Operating Margin: An unprecedented 80%, underscoring extreme profitability driven by high-demand products.
Shareholder Returns and AI Memory Leadership
A key driver for the stock's rally was the announcement of a massive capital return plan. According to CFO Kim Woo-hyun, the company will pursue shareholder returns of approximately KRW 100 trillion through the 2026 fiscal year, the largest such commitment in its history. The plan includes at least KRW 30 trillion in cash dividends and at least KRW 60 trillion in share repurchases and cancellations.
AdFueling the financial success is the company's leadership in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, which is critical for AI infrastructure. SK hynix confirmed that HBM4, its next-generation product, entered full-scale mass production during the third quarter. The company expects HBM4 to overtake its predecessor, HBM3E, in both shipment volume and revenue share in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Market Reaction and Outlook
Investors reacted positively to the news, with SK hynix ADRs jumping 7.4% to $156.15 in pre-open trading. The company also provided bullish forward guidance, projecting mid-20% DRAM bit shipment growth for Q4 and forecasting that structural supply-demand imbalances for memory will persist through 2030.
The strong results lifted the broader AI memory sector, signaling robust demand across the industry. Shares of competitors like Micron and SanDisk each climbed over 4% in sympathy. Analysts at RBC Capital reiterated their rating on the stock, citing the strong HBM demand, while Susquehanna noted the U.S.-listed ADRs appeared undervalued.
