Background

UBS has downgraded Swiss medical technology firm Ypsomed AG to "Neutral" from "Buy," citing a significant setback in a clinical trial for a key client's drug. The move, which included a price target reduction, follows disappointing data for Novo Nordisk's diabetes treatment Cagrisema, raising concerns about the mid-term growth outlook for Ypsomed as the autoinjector supplier.

Details of the Downgrade

In a note to clients, UBS analysts cut their 12-month price target on Ypsomed to 400 Swiss francs from a previous 425 francs. The downgrade was a direct response to the outcome of a pivotal study for Cagrisema, a combination drug for which Ypsomed provides the delivery device.

Investors reacted negatively to the revised outlook, with Ypsomed shares falling 6.7% in early trading following the report's publication. The downgrade suggests a more cautious view on the earnings potential tied to this specific client project.

Financial Forecasts Revised Lower

The reassessment stems from Novo Nordisk's Phase 3 REIMAGINE-4 trial, where Cagrisema failed to demonstrate non-inferiority against a rival drug on the key metric of lowering HbA1c levels in patients with diabetes. As a result, UBS's pharmaceutical team slashed its forecast for Cagrisema's peak sales potential in Type 2 diabetes by 50%.

This has a direct knock-on effect for Ypsomed. UBS lowered its forecast for the company's fiscal 2029/30 GLP-1 product sales by 10% and cut its earnings-per-share (EPS) estimates for fiscal years 2026-2029 by an average of 5%. The bank's revised EPS forecasts now sit approximately 3% below the market consensus.

Broader Outlook and Valuation

Despite the Cagrisema-related concerns, UBS noted that Ypsomed's underlying business remains supported by a strong pipeline of 180 projects and ongoing capacity expansion. The bank continues to forecast a 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for its Delivery Systems sales, with GLP-1 drugs expected to grow from about 10% of sales to 27% by fiscal 2029/30.

UBS said its new price target is based on a discounted cash flow (DCF) model. It also noted that Ypsomed's valuation, at an estimated 17.9 times its fiscal 2026 EV/EBITDA, is broadly in line with its premium peer group. Key upcoming catalysts for investors include Novo Nordisk’s Capital Markets Day on September 20-21 and the expected regulatory decision on Cagrisema in late 2026 or early 2027.
