UBS Holds Neutral View on Japanese Yen, Citing Central Bank Policy Gap
Text size
Background

UBS has maintained its neutral stance on the Japanese yen, asserting that the fundamental drivers keeping the currency weak remain firmly in place. The bank's analysis suggests that despite recent foreign exchange interventions, the underlying upward pressure on the U.S. dollar against the yen (USD/JPY) has not been fundamentally altered.

Policy Divergence Remains Key Driver

The core of UBS's outlook is the significant gap in monetary policy between the United States and Japan. The firm cites a persistently hawkish Federal Reserve compared to a Bank of Japan (BOJ) that is only tightening its policy at a gradual pace. This interest rate differential continues to favor the U.S. dollar, making it a more attractive currency for investors seeking higher yields.

According to UBS, a sustained reversal in the yen's fortunes would require two key developments:

  • Softer U.S. economic data that would allow the Federal Reserve to adopt a more accommodative, or easing, stance.
  • A more proactive policy shift from the Bank of Japan that successfully restores market confidence in the yen's stability.

Forecasts Point to Elevated Range

While recent joint interventions provided temporary relief for the yen, UBS does not see them as a long-term solution. The bank's analysts expect the USD/JPY pair to continue trading within an elevated range for the foreseeable future.

Reflecting this view, UBS has issued specific forecasts for the currency pair. The firm projects that USD/JPY will reach 160 by the end of 2026 before moderating slightly to 158 by the middle of 2027.
