Tokenized Stock Trading Surges Past $370 Billion in Q3 Amid Broader Crypto Cooldown

While the broader cryptocurrency market shows signs of slowing momentum, on-chain trading of tokenized stocks, ETFs, and related derivatives is experiencing explosive growth. This emerging sector is gaining traction, driven by clearer regulatory frameworks, increasing adoption by Wall Street institutions, and rising investor demand for new speculative trading products.
On-Chain Volume Soars
In the third quarter, on-chain trading volume for tokenized stocks and ETFs exceeded $370 billion, according to a report published Thursday by blockchain data firm Dune Analytics. This marks a significant acceleration for the sector, with monthly trading volumes growing nearly 18-fold since January of this year. The data aggregates activity from over 200 trading platforms across 12 different blockchains.
This trend stands in sharp contrast to the general crypto market, which has recently seen declining overall trading volumes, a slowdown in ETF inflows, and waning interest in speculative meme coins. The growth in tokenized assets suggests a shift in focus toward blockchain-based representations of traditional financial instruments.
Institutional and Regulatory Tailwinds
What was once a niche corner of the crypto industry is now drawing serious attention from major financial players and regulators. In a key development this September, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved a five-year exemption allowing qualified platforms to trade tokenized U.S. stocks on a blockchain, providing a significant regulatory green light.
Meanwhile, established firms are entering the market. Robinhood (HOOD) recently launched its "Stock Tokens," which are digital securities designed to track the price of individual stocks and are backed on a 1:1 basis by the underlying shares. The company also announced plans to offer weekend trading for U.S. stocks and leveraged perpetual futures for select cryptocurrencies, further blurring the lines with traditional market structures.
AdThe Future of Asset Trading
Industry experts believe asset tokenization will be a defining theme for the remainder of the decade. Ric Edelman, founder of the Digital Assets Council of Financial Professionals, stated that the financial services industry will progressively replace existing securities with tokenized versions. He projects this trend will eventually expand to other asset classes like real estate and collectibles, enabling 24/7 trading, same-day settlement (T+0), and nearly zero transaction costs.
Mark Connors, Chief Investment Strategist at Risk Dimensions, described the development as part of a broader "gamification of investing." He noted that tokenization increases the velocity at which assets can be traded and compared its potential impact to that of ETFs, which lowered the barrier for investors to gain exposure to assets like gold and bitcoin.
A Converging Market
The expansion of on-chain finance is not limited to equities. Perpetual futures linked to stocks, ETFs, and indices are also seeing massive volume, with Dune data showing $201 billion traded on the Hyperliquid blockchain alone in the third quarter. Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket are also attracting significant investor interest.
Fredrik Haga, co-founder and CEO of Dune Analytics, observed that tokenized stocks and stock perpetuals, which began as separate market experiments, are now converging into a unified on-chain stock market. He anticipates that "the line between the on-chain stock market and the traditional stock market will become more blurry every quarter."
