Bitcoin Slips Below $84,000 as Tech Sell-Off Dampens Risk Appetite

Bitcoin extended its recent declines on Tuesday, with prices struggling to hold ground amid a wider market retreat from speculative assets. The downturn was largely driven by a significant sell-off in global technology stocks, which has created a risk-off environment for investors.
As of 1:56 AM ET (13:56 GMT), Bitcoin traded down 0.4% at $83,673.1, after touching an intraday low of $81,054.7, according to market data. The broader cryptocurrency market also faced headwinds from profit-taking in October following a strong third quarter.
Tech Weakness Spurs Risk-Off Mood
The pressure on Bitcoin comes as a wave of selling hits global artificial intelligence and technology shares. Investor confidence has been shaken by mounting doubts over the long-term profitability of AI, exacerbated by reports last week that industry bellwether OpenAI's revenue for 2026 was tracking below prior expectations.
This sentiment has spilled over into the cryptocurrency market, which often moves in tandem with high-growth tech stocks. While not directly linked, the sell-off has diminished investor appetite for speculative assets, with capital rotating toward traditional safe havens like gold and the Japanese yen this week.
Whale Activity and Market Headwinds
AdAdding to market uncertainty, on-chain data revealed significant movement from a long-dormant Bitcoin whale. A wallet created in 2019, which had been inactive for six years, transferred 5,582 BTC, valued at approximately $378 million, on Monday.
The coins were moved to five separate addresses, with no immediate signs of a sale. However, such large transfers from long-term holders are often monitored by traders as a potential precursor to selling on exchanges.
Altcoins Follow Broader Decline
Other major cryptocurrencies also fell, tracking Bitcoin's negative performance. The broader altcoin market saw widespread losses as market sentiment soured.
- Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, dropped 1.4% to $2,534.41.
- XRP fell by 2.7%.
- Other major tokens including Cardano (ADA) and Solana (SOL) were down 5.3% and 3.6%, respectively.
- BNB registered a decline of 1.3%.
