RBC Initiates Zurich Insurance at 'Outperform,' Citing U.S. P&C Recovery

Background

RBC Capital Markets initiated coverage on Zurich Insurance Group AG (SIX:ZURN) with an "Outperform" rating and a price target of CHF 670. The brokerage's positive outlook is based on the Swiss insurer's potential to capitalize on a recovery in the U.S. commercial property and casualty market.

Analyst's Thesis

According to RBC, Zurich has successfully transformed into a capital-light, high-return insurer over the past decade. The firm highlighted Zurich's industry-leading life insurance margins and its differentiated U.S. fee-based business through Farmers as key strengths.

The primary catalysts for the stock's expected outperformance are an improving pricing environment for U.S. commercial property and casualty (P&C) insurance and the pending acquisition of Beazley. RBC believes this combination will bolster earnings growth and help the insurer exceed its target of more than 9% annual earnings-per-share growth through 2027.

Segment Outlook

RBC expects Zurich's largest division, P&C insurance, to see significant benefits from improving U.S. commercial pricing. The note pointed to accelerating momentum, with P&C premium growth rising to 8% in the first quarter from 5% for the full-year 2025.

Beyond P&C, the brokerage identified other areas of strength:

  • Life Insurance: This business is seen as a key source of high-quality earnings, with RBC forecasting operating profit growth of about 6% annually through 2030.
  • Farmers: The U.S. business is expected to benefit from easing competitive pressures in the auto insurance market, potentially allowing for accelerated policy growth.

Valuation and Market Context

RBC stated that Zurich's stock has underperformed the European insurance sector for the last two years, largely due to slowing U.S. commercial insurance pricing—a trend the firm believes is now reversing. The brokerage argues that Zurich's premium valuation is justified by its superior return on equity, stronger earnings outlook, and attractive dividend yield compared to European peers.

The firm also forecasts that Zurich will resume annual share buybacks of CHF 1 billion starting in 2027. In early trading in Zurich following the report, the company's shares were up slightly by 0.1% to 620.60 Swiss francs.
