Novartis Pipeline Faces Crucial Test Amid Patent Cliff and Premium Valuation

Summary
Novartis investors are closely watching for results from three major drug trials in the second half of the year, which analysts say are vital to justifying the company's premium valuation as it faces looming patent expirations.
Novartis is heading into a pivotal second half of the year, with investors focused on three critical drug trial readouts that could determine its growth trajectory for the next decade. The results are seen as essential for justifying the Swiss pharmaceutical giant's premium stock valuation as it navigates a period of significant patent expirations.
High-Stakes Pipeline
Analysts are monitoring late-stage trial data for a trio of experimental drugs with significant commercial potential. According to a Reuters report, these therapies could collectively generate more than $10 billion in peak annual sales.
- Pelacarsen: A treatment for cardiovascular disease.
- Remibrutinib: A potential therapy for multiple sclerosis.
- Del-desiran: A drug targeting a genetic disorder.
This new revenue is crucial to offset the anticipated impact of patent losses for blockbuster drugs like the psoriasis treatment Cosentyx and breast cancer therapy Kisqali. The company's heart medication, Entresto, is already facing generic competition, with sales expected to decline by $4 billion this year.
Valuation Under Scrutiny
AdNovartis currently trades at a sector-leading valuation of approximately 16 times forward earnings, with its shares having risen 11% year-to-date. Some analysts warn that this premium already prices in a high degree of clinical success.
"At 16 times, you do need those growth levers to come through," Jefferies analyst Michael Leuchten told Reuters. The sentiment was echoed by Goldman Sachs analyst James Quigley, who stated that Novartis needs at least two of the three trials to succeed. "If two of those fail, that 16-times multiple looks very, very vulnerable," he said.
Focus on Clinical Significance
Beyond simple success or failure, investors will scrutinize the quality of the data. For pelacarsen, which is being tested in the HORIZON study to see if lowering a particle called lipoprotein(a) reduces heart attack risk, the bar for success is high.
UBS analysts noted that while a 12% relative risk reduction might achieve statistical significance, clinicians may require a reduction of 15% or more to deem the drug "clinically meaningful." Sven Borho, a managing partner at investor OrbiMed, highlighted pelacarsen's potential, telling Reuters, "Lp(a) is particularly interesting because there is nothing on the market today." A first-to-market approval could make it a major long-term sales driver for Novartis.
