Airlines Face Profit Squeeze From Surging Fuel Costs as Online Travel Sector Gains Favor

Summary
Airlines are grappling with a nearly 40% jump in fuel expenses, leading to slashed profit forecasts despite record passenger loads. In contrast, analysts are highlighting a significant growth opportunity for online travel agencies driven by a massive offline-to-online market shift.
The global travel industry is presenting a starkly divided outlook, with airlines facing significant profit pressure from soaring jet fuel prices even as passenger demand hits all-time highs. This divergence is pushing investors to look more favorably upon asset-light online travel agencies (OTAs), which are seen as having a more durable path to growth.
Airlines Hit by Fuel Shock
Despite planes flying at a record 84% load factor, the airline industry's profitability is being eroded by a sharp increase in operating costs. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) now projects the industry's global fuel bill will reach approximately $350 billion in 2026, a significant jump from the $252 billion spent in 2025. The trade body attributes the 39% year-over-year increase to a surge in jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in Iran.
As a direct result, IATA has been forced to halve its 2026 profit outlook for the industry. The forecast for North American carriers has been revised downward to a net profit of $9.4 billion from a previous estimate of $12.4 billion. This profit squeeze comes even as overall industry revenues are projected to grow by 9.4% to around $1.16 trillion, underscoring the challenge of converting strong demand into bottom-line growth.
Online Travel's Structural Runway
In contrast to the challenges facing airlines, analysts are highlighting the structural advantages of OTAs. In a recent note initiating coverage on the travel sector, Morgan Stanley pointed to a massive long-term opportunity in the ongoing shift from offline to online booking. The firm estimates that with global leisure bookings only ~70% penetrated online, there is a ~$700 billion market still to migrate to digital platforms.
AdMorgan Stanley forecasts that OTA bookings will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7% through 2030. The firm identified Booking Holdings (BKNG) as a preferred pick, citing its strong fundamentals and a belief that its access to fragmented, independent hotel inventory provides a competitive advantage against potential disruption from AI-driven search tools.
Market and Investor Takeaways
This bifurcated environment underscores that sub-sector selection is now critical for investors in the travel space. Key risks for the entire sector remain, including the future trajectory of fuel prices, the resilience of consumer discretionary spending in the face of economic uncertainty, and the long-term impact of AI on customer acquisition.
Investors are also monitoring for a potential post-World Cup travel hangover, as the June-July tournament provided a temporary demand catalyst. While the long-term trends favor digital platforms, the near-term outlook for airlines will remain heavily dependent on volatile energy markets and their ability to pass on higher costs to consumers.
