Morgan Stanley Initiates on Bitcoin Miners, Citing AI Data Center Potential

Morgan Stanley has initiated coverage on bitcoin miners pivoting to artificial intelligence infrastructure, arguing that companies with large, grid-connected power assets are uniquely positioned to benefit from the explosive demand for AI data centers.
The Power-for-AI Thesis
According to the brokerage, power has become the primary bottleneck for AI infrastructure growth, making established bitcoin mining sites attractive candidates for conversion into high-performance computing (HPC) data centers. Morgan Stanley analysts noted that as hyperscalers race to expand their AI capabilities, the demand for electricity and compute is set to outstrip available supply.
This dynamic allows owners of these "powered shell" assets to command favorable lease terms from AI companies seeking rapid access to electricity. The firm estimates that even if all major U.S. bitcoin mining facilities were repurposed for AI, data center developers could still face a power shortage through 2028.
Analyst Ratings and Price Targets
AdMorgan Stanley initiated coverage with specific ratings for three key players in the emerging sector:
- Hut 8 Mining (HUT): Rated Overweight and named the firm's top pick, with a price target of $263, implying approximately 141% upside. Analysts highlighted the company's strong portfolio of power assets and its track record of securing high-quality AI infrastructure leases.
- Riot Platforms (RIOT): Also rated Overweight with a $36 price target. The firm cited Riot's extensive pipeline of powered sites, particularly its Corsicana and Rockdale campuses, as prime locations for attracting AI data center tenants.
- Applied Digital (APLD): Assigned an Equal-weight rating with a $36.50 price target. While acknowledging its sizable contracted AI lease portfolio, Morgan Stanley noted that lower returns on invested capital and potential financing risks temper its upside potential relative to peers.
Market Implications
The investment bank's thesis suggests that bitcoin mining companies offer one of the fastest and lowest-risk solutions to the power constraints currently facing AI developers. As AI capabilities continue to advance at a non-linear pace, the sustained demand for computing power supports a long-term value creation opportunity for miners successfully executing this strategic pivot.
