Moderna Stock Downgraded by William Blair on Valuation Concerns After Major Rally

Background

Moderna Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) shares fell 3% in premarket trading after William Blair downgraded the stock to Market Perform from Outperform, citing valuation constraints following a significant run-up in its share price.

Valuation Seen as Stretched

The downgrade comes after Moderna's stock posted a staggering 545% year-to-date rally, including a surge of nearly 250% since August. According to William Blair analyst Myles Minter, this meteoric rise was largely driven by encouraging Phase 3 data for the company's personalized cancer vaccine candidate, intismeran.

Minter noted that Moderna's current valuation already reflects an implied 70% to 75% probability of success across its expanded oncology pipeline. The analyst indicated that this leaves the company's net present value only modestly above its current market capitalization, suggesting limited near-term upside for investors.

Investor attention is now centered on the commercial potential of intismeran, which is being developed alongside Merck & Co.’s Keytruda for adjuvant melanoma. While William Blair acknowledged that interim data supports a potential new standard of care, the key debate is whether the therapy can expand beyond melanoma into broader solid tumors like lung, renal, and bladder cancer.

The firm cautioned that moving into cancers with lower tumor mutational burdens presents "significant biological hurdles and distinct clinical risk." Key developments investors are watching include:

  • The upcoming Phase 2 INTERPATH-004 trial in renal cell carcinoma, with readouts expected by late 2026 or 2027.
  • A tour of Moderna's manufacturing facility in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on November 12, which is expected to address questions about commercial scalability and supply-chain logistics.
