Roblox Shares Fall After Short-Seller Alleges Major Safety Flaws, Slowing Growth

Shares of Roblox Corp. (NYSE: RBLX) fell by 3% on Tuesday after short-seller Bleecker Street Research published a critical report and disclosed a short position against the online gaming platform. The report alleges significant vulnerabilities in Roblox's child safety systems and points to a sharp slowdown in core user metrics.
Safety and Verification Flaws Cited
Bleecker Street's central claim is that Roblox's age verification and parental controls are easily bypassed, creating significant safety risks. The research firm argues that a thriving secondary market for pre-verified accounts undermines the platform's safety architecture, which relies on a one-time facial scan.
To support its thesis, Bleecker Street reported several findings:
- It successfully purchased 100 age-verified child accounts from third-party marketplaces for a total of $190.91.
- Researchers logged into all 100 accounts from five different countries within two hours without triggering any re-verification requests.
- The report identified nine active secondary markets, with just four of them hosting more than 65,000 listings for pre-verified credentials.
The investigation also documented instances where parental controls were bypassed, allowing minor-registered accounts to access explicit content, including sexual minigames, pornography, and extremist imagery, according to the report.
Decelerating User Metrics Highlighted
AdBeyond platform safety, the report challenges Roblox's post-pandemic growth narrative, citing both third-party data and the company's own financial filings as evidence of a slowdown.
Analyzing data from 6.7 million accounts, Bleecker Street estimated that new active users declined approximately 50% year-over-year in the third quarter. The firm also pointed to a deceleration in key operational figures reported by Roblox over a two-quarter span:
- Daily active users contracted from 151.5 million to 123 million.
- Monthly paying users dropped from 36.7 million to 27 million.
- Creator payout growth moderated from 85% to 15%.
The short-seller also noted that Roblox's third-quarter bookings guidance projects a decline of 14% to 18%, which it argues further underscores the operational slowdown.
Investor Implications
The allegations from Bleecker Street present a two-pronged challenge for investors, targeting both the platform's brand integrity and its fundamental growth story. The firm concluded that Roblox is a "slower-growing business burdened by child-safety commitments its platform architecture cannot enforce," suggesting the company faces significant structural headwinds.
