JPMorgan Sees Semiconductor Selloff as a Tactical Buying Opportunity

Summary
Strategists at JPMorgan argue that the recent 20-50% pullback in AI-related semiconductor stocks presents a compelling tactical opportunity, citing a disconnect between falling prices and resilient earnings fundamentals.
A recent sharp selloff in semiconductor stocks is a tactical buying opportunity, not the beginning of a prolonged downturn, according to strategists at JPMorgan. The bank maintains an Overweight rating on the sector, arguing that strong underlying fundamentals are being overlooked amid the market rotation.
Correction Creates Opening
AI-linked chip stocks have experienced significant drawdowns from recent peaks. According to a note from JPMorgan, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) has fallen 20%, while individual memory chip giants and related AI stocks have declined between 20% and 50%.
Despite this weakness in a key market segment, strategists led by Mislav Matejka noted that the broader market remains stable, with the MSCI World index just 1-2% off its all-time highs. "We do not expect prolonged market weakness on the back of these rotations," the strategists wrote, suggesting the pullback is contained.
Price Disconnects from Fundamentals
JPMorgan's core argument rests on a growing divergence between stock prices and their fundamental outlook. The bank highlighted that for European semiconductor companies, the price relative to the market has fallen even as 12-month forward earnings estimates have continued to rise.
Ad"An increasing gap is opening between Semis price relative and earnings relative," the report stated. With fundamentals remaining robust, the strategists believe investors should consider increasing their exposure to the sector over the summer.
Technicals and Outlook
Several factors support the case for a potential rebound. From a technical standpoint, JPMorgan noted that the SOX's Relative Strength Index (RSI) is approaching "oversold" levels, and investor positioning has become "less stretched" after reaching highs last seen in the 1999-2000 period.
Fundamentally, the bank's tech analysts forecast structural supply-demand tightness for DRAM and NAND memory to extend through 2028, driven by persistent demand from AI and servers. JPMorgan also pointed to upcoming Q2 earnings reports, such as positive commentary from TSMC, as potential catalysts that could provide a floor for stock prices.
