AI Optimism Lifts Chip Sector
The gains in Seoul followed a record-setting session on Wall Street, where the Nasdaq Composite hit a new high. The rally was reportedly sparked by the successful launch of a personal AI agent by Meta Platforms, which investors believe will drive a new wave of demand for advanced chips and related hardware.
This positive sentiment rippled through Asian markets, with SK Hynix and its peers helping to push South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index up by 1.7% during the session. SK Hynix's American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) had already signaled positive momentum, closing 0.7% higher in U.S. trading on Monday.
Positive Outlook for Memory Demand
AdBeyond the broader market trend, company-specific factors also appeared to support investor confidence. In recent research, analysts at Citi reiterated a Buy rating on SK Hynix, citing a strong outlook for memory chips driven by AI infrastructure needs.
Key projections from the bank include:
- Enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) demand is forecast to grow 52.9% year-over-year in 2027.
- The NAND memory market is expected to face supply deficits of 6.1% in 2027 and 5.5% in 2028.
Furthermore, reports suggest SK Hynix is a leading candidate, alongside Samsung Electronics, to supply high-performance GDDR7 DRAM for Sony's next-generation PlayStation 6 console. This development could open up a significant new avenue for high-volume consumer demand.
