Background

J.P. Morgan initiated coverage on Honeywell Aerospace with a "Neutral" rating, concluding that while the company is well-positioned for long-term growth, significant near-term investments in its supply chain will likely limit margin expansion and stock performance. The investment bank set a December 2027 price target of $255 for the aerospace and defense supplier.

Rating and Valuation

In a note to clients on Friday, J.P. Morgan analysts outlined a balanced risk/reward profile for the company. The firm's valuation is based on a 27.5-times multiple of its 2028 free cash flow estimate, which it said reflects a modest discount compared to peer aerospace suppliers.

The brokerage acknowledged that Honeywell Aerospace's diversified portfolio provides strong exposure to growing commercial aviation and defense markets. However, it cautioned that executing on this growth will require higher spending that is expected to restrain profitability in the near term.

Growth Drivers and Headwinds

J.P. Morgan projects strong top-line growth for the company, forecasting revenue to increase by approximately 7% annually through 2030, reaching nearly $25 billion. The Defense and Space division is seen as the primary growth engine, fueled by increased missile production and higher overall defense spending.

The bank highlighted the company's role in supplying guidance, navigation, and electronic warfare systems for priority U.S. missile programs like THAAD, SM-3, and Tomahawk. Despite the positive revenue outlook, the report anticipates operating margins will remain largely flat in 2026. The firm forecasts only about 200 basis points of margin expansion through the end of the decade due to the ongoing investments.

Cash Flow and Capital Strategy

J.P. Morgan expects Honeywell Aerospace's free cash flow generation to accelerate in the latter half of the decade as leverage is reduced and cash from operations improves. The firm anticipates that management will prioritize its use of cash for debt reduction, dividends, and bolt-on acquisitions before considering regular share buybacks.
