Background

Goldman Sachs reinstated its coverage of Erste Group Bank AG (VIE:ERST) with a Buy rating, establishing a 12-month price target of €150. The investment bank's analysis, published July 9, 2026, suggests the target represents approximately 33% upside from the stock's last closing price of €113.

Polish Expansion Drives Bullish Thesis

According to Goldman Sachs, Erste Group is entering a new period of structural growth following its acquisition of a controlling stake in Santander Bank Polska. The move provides the Austrian lender with immediate scale in Poland, which the note described as the largest and one of the fastest-growing banking markets in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

Goldman's analysts stated this acquisition reinforces Erste's long-term strategy of building leading banking franchises across the CEE region. They also anticipate that Erste's management will prioritize capital accumulation to potentially increase its ownership in the Polish business from its current 49% to around 75%, a move that could boost group earnings by an estimated 5%.

Stronger Financials Forecast

Beyond the Polish market, Goldman Sachs highlighted a broader positive outlook for Erste, citing it as one of Europe's more attractive banking growth stories. The firm pointed to several factors supporting this view:

  • Resilient loan growth across its CEE markets.
  • A recovering Austrian economy.
  • Strong momentum in fee income.
  • Relatively limited sensitivity to changes in interest rates.

These elements are expected to support sustained revenue growth and more resilient earnings compared to many of its European peers. The brokerage forecasts a 2026 net profit of €4.2 billion for Erste Group, a figure above the Visible Alpha consensus. This optimistic forecast is driven by expectations of stronger net interest income, better cost efficiency, and lower-than-expected mortgage provisions in Poland.

Improving Returns and Profitability

Goldman Sachs projects a significant improvement in the bank's profitability metrics, underpinned by its Polish expansion and broader regional growth. The firm forecasts Erste's group return on tangible equity (ROTE) will rise from 16.7% in 2025 to 21.0% in 2026, and further to 24.4% in 2027.
