Background

Global bond yields held steady on Monday, pausing a multi-week selloff as investors assessed the impact of escalating geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran and looked ahead to key guidance from central bankers.

U.S. Prepares 'Financial Offensive' on Iran

Market sentiment is being heavily influenced by a sharp increase in rhetoric from Washington. The U.S. government threatened over the weekend what it called "the greatest financial offensive ever marshalled" against Tehran, announcing it would unveil new sanctions on Monday aimed at penalizing entities doing business with Iran. In response, Tehran vowed to halt all energy exports from the Persian Gulf if the economic pressure continues.

Sovereign debt traders are focused on a press conference scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EDT, where U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to detail the new measures. While Brent crude futures eased about 1.5% to $91.80 a barrel, bond investors remain concerned about inflation risks from potential supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, demanding a higher term premium on long-dated debt.

Markets Await Jackson Hole Guidance

With geopolitical risks rising, investors are turning to the Federal Reserve for clear policy direction. Attention is now centered on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s keynote address at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday. Bond traders will be analyzing his remarks for signals on whether the central bank will hold rates in September, following a divided 9-3 vote at the last FOMC meeting, or if persistent energy-driven inflation could necessitate further hikes this year.

Selloff Pauses Amid Fiscal Concerns

The stability in yields follows two consecutive weeks of losses for global bond markets. On Monday, key European yields were little changed:

  • Germany's 10-year Bund yield held steady at 3.256%.
  • France's 10-year OAT yield was stable at 4.128%.
  • Italy's 10-year BTP yield traded near 4.092%.

Last week, an attempt by Secretary Bessent to talk down yields by suggesting an expansion of the Treasury's buyback program failed to reassure investors. Market participants remain skeptical because the buybacks are funded by issuing short-term debt, which alters the maturity profile of government liabilities but does not reduce the overall supply. This skepticism persists as the gross U.S. national debt surpasses $40 trillion, straining primary dealer balance sheets and keeping upward pressure on long-term borrowing costs.
