Background

Bitcoin's ongoing price correction, which has seen the cryptocurrency fall roughly 54% from its cycle peak, is a “rather comforting” sign that the market is maturing, according to a note from Bernstein analysts. While the digital asset has retested lows near $60,000, the current drawdown is significantly shallower than the 75% to 90% declines seen in previous bear markets.

A Milder Correction

Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani noted that Bitcoin's drop from its November 2025 peak of about $125,000 has been less severe than in the past. “Although it is unclear if we are completely out of the woods... this crypto bear market has been milder than the previous drawdown,” the analysts wrote.

This relative stability suggests a more resilient market structure, even as the price has struggled to regain upward momentum after a modest bounce to around $63,000.

Shifting Capital Flows

The market's underlying dynamics are changing, with institutional flows moderating. According to Bernstein, capital inflows from Bitcoin treasury companies and ETFs have totaled $10 billion in 2026, a sharp decrease from the $60 billion recorded in the previous year.

Key trends highlighted by the analysts include:

  • ETF Outflows: Bitcoin ETFs have experienced $5.5 billion in outflows this year from a $74 billion asset base.
  • Corporate Buying: These outflows have been partially offset by consistent buying from corporate treasury holders, most notably a company identified in the report as Strategy (STRC). Bernstein noted it is “unlikely any major Bitcoin forced supply could come from Strategy,” citing its 17 months of cash reserves and a low debt-to-collateral ratio of just 13%.
  • Miner Selling: U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners have become net sellers as they diversify into AI data center operations. This has resulted in U.S. miners' share of the global hash rate falling by over 40 basis points in the last two quarters.

Regulatory and Price Outlook

On the regulatory front, Bernstein pointed to ongoing developments such as rulemaking for stablecoins under the GENIUS Act and the introduction of crypto perpetual futures on U.S. platforms. The firm views the passage of the broader CLARITY Act as a “coin-flip” this year.

Despite the challenging market, the analysts concluded that the correction is a sign of a maturing ecosystem. “Any crypto correction is painful, but this one has been rather comforting,” they stated, adding that “crypto feels like it’s growing up.” While Bernstein remains bullish long-term, it conceded that its $150,000 year-end price target for Bitcoin now “appears ambitious.”
