Background

Bitcoin's recent price correction, which has seen it fall approximately 54% from its cycle high, is a "rather comforting" sign of a maturing market, according to analysts at Bernstein. The investment firm noted that while the cryptocurrency has retested lows near $60,000, the current drawdown is markedly shallower than the 75% to 90% corrections seen in previous bear markets.

A Milder Downturn

In a recent note, Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani observed that Bitcoin has declined from a peak of about $125,000 in November 2025 to a recent trading range around $63,000. "Although it is unclear if we are completely out of the woods... this crypto bear market has been milder than the previous drawdown," the analysts wrote, adding that while "any crypto correction is painful," this one suggests the asset class is growing up.

Despite the more resilient price action, the firm acknowledged that its year-end price target of $150,000 for Bitcoin now "appears ambitious in context of the market correction."

Shifting Capital and Mining Dynamics

The market's structure has evolved, with different players influencing price. According to Bernstein, key trends include:

  • ETF Outflows: Bitcoin ETFs have seen net outflows of $5.5 billion this year from a $74 billion asset base.
  • Corporate Buying: These outflows have been partially offset by buying from corporate treasuries, most notably from a major holder identified as Strategy (STRC). Bernstein stated it is "unlikely any major Bitcoin forced supply could come from Strategy."
  • Miner Selling: U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners have transitioned to become net sellers. They are also ceding market share to international miners as they pivot some operations toward AI data centers, leading to a drop of over 40 basis points in the U.S. share of the global hash rate over the last two quarters.

Regulatory and Market Structure

Bernstein highlighted ongoing regulatory developments as another sign of market maturation. The note pointed to continued rulemaking for stablecoins under the GENIUS Act and the introduction of crypto perpetual futures on regulated U.S. platforms like Kalshi and Coinbase. The analysts view the potential passage of the broader CLARITY Act this year as a "coin-flip."
