Air France-KLM Shares Decline After Kepler Cheuvreux Downgrade on 'Excessive' Rally

Summary
Kepler Cheuvreux lowered its rating on Air France-KLM to 'Reduce,' citing a recent share price rally that it views as excessive and a lack of near-term catalysts for further gains.
Shares of Air France-KLM (AIRF) fell after Kepler Cheuvreux downgraded the airline's stock to Reduce from Hold, arguing that a recent surge in its share price has been "somewhat excessive" and outpaced its fundamental outlook.
Analyst's Rationale
In a note to clients, Kepler Cheuvreux analyst Marc Zeck stated that Air France-KLM "has outperformed the sector since the start of the Iran crisis and now trades at the upper end of its five-year share price range." Despite the downgrade, the brokerage raised its price target on the stock to €11.50 from €10.50.
However, the new target price implies a potential downside of approximately 11% from the stock's previous closing price. Zeck noted that the combination of the strong share price recovery and an absence of company-specific catalysts limits the stock’s appeal in the near term.
Valuation and Profit Outlook
AdWhile acknowledging that Air France-KLM offers a high-quality premium cabin product, Kepler Cheuvreux sees limited room for growth. The firm's profit estimates for the airline over the next two years remain slightly below consensus, leaving it "without any obvious medium-term earnings upside to talk about," according to Zeck.
Kepler also highlighted a specific area of concern in the airline's maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) business. The firm's profit expectations for this division are significantly below market consensus, which it views as "too aggressive," particularly when compared to growth expectations for Lufthansa's MRO operations.
Market Reaction
Following the ratings change, shares in the Franco-Dutch carrier declined sharply. The stock was down 3.5% in Paris trading by mid-morning, reflecting investor reaction to the revised outlook from Kepler Cheuvreux.
