Bitcoin Holds Above $84,000, Poised for Best Q3 Gain Since 2017

Summary
The leading cryptocurrency is set to close its second-best third quarter on record, with a gain of over 43%, supported by strong spot trading and institutional interest.
Bitcoin held its ground above the $84,000 mark over the weekend, putting the leading cryptocurrency on track to close out its most profitable third quarter since 2017. The price stability comes amid strong spot market activity and renewed calls for greater institutional adoption.
A Historic Quarter
As of early Sunday, Bitcoin was trading at $84,626.50, a gain of 0.84% for the day, according to Investing.com data. This positions the digital asset for a quarterly gain of approximately 43.5%, a surge from its price of around $58,500 at the start of July.
The performance marks Bitcoin's strongest Q3 since 2017, when it rallied about 80%, according to data cited by crypto publication Bitcoin.com. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has seen an even more dramatic rise, climbing roughly 71% during the quarter for its best Q3 on record.
Market Drivers and Institutional Focus
The market's strength has been underpinned by a combination of increased spot trading volumes and relatively restrained profit-taking from investors. Bitcoin also successfully navigated a large quarterly options expiry on Friday without significant price disruption.
AdInstitutional involvement remains a key theme. Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor recently urged U.S. banks to expand their crypto services, including custody and loans collateralized by Bitcoin. Saylor specifically called on regulators to reconsider the 1,250% risk weighting applied to certain crypto holdings under international banking standards, arguing it restricts broader bank participation.
Security Risks Remain in Focus
Despite the market's positive momentum, a major security breach served as a reminder of the sector's inherent risks. The crypto exchange Bitget suffered a hack resulting in the loss of $387.5 million.
According to a CoinDesk report, the attacker had moved approximately $83 million in stolen XRP by Saturday. While exchanges can freeze accounts receiving illicit funds, Ripple is unable to freeze the native XRP token directly on its ledger. Bitget has stated that its protection fund will cover all user losses and that withdrawals are scheduled to resume in phases, starting with Bitcoin on September 28.
