Bitcoin Stalls Near $80,000 as MicroStrategy Pauses Purchases, Fed Meeting Looms

Bitcoin's price stabilized on Tuesday after breaking below a key trading range, as markets weighed a pause in purchases by major corporate holder MicroStrategy against broader caution ahead of a pivotal Federal Reserve policy meeting this week.
As of 10:57 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading largely flat at $80,373.3, after briefly dipping to $79,494, according to data from Investing.com. The move pushed the leading cryptocurrency below the $80,000 to $87,000 channel it had maintained for the past month, signaling potential weakness.
MicroStrategy Halts Buying Amid Market Caution
A key factor pressuring the market was a disclosure from MicroStrategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR), which revealed it did not buy or sell any Bitcoin in the week of October 19 to 25. The enterprise software firm is the largest corporate holder of the asset, and its regular purchases have been a significant source of demand.
- The company's total holdings stand at approximately 848,517 bitcoins.
- The total acquisition cost was about $64.02 billion, for an average price of $75,446 per coin.
This pause comes as investors broadly reduce exposure to speculative assets ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision on Wednesday. While the central bank is expected to hold rates steady, persistent inflation may prompt hawkish forward guidance, creating a headwind for cryptocurrencies.
Contrasting Institutional Views
AdDespite the near-term price pressure, some institutional players remain bullish. Alex Thorn, Head of Research at Galaxy, stated in a recent report that Bitcoin is in an "accumulation phase" that has historically preceded significant price increases, arguing that the bear market likely bottomed out in June.
In contrast, Cathie Wood's Ark Invest appeared to be rebalancing its crypto exposure. On Monday, the firm sold $15.9 million worth of its ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF while purchasing $5.2 million in shares of Circle Internet Group, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin.
Altcoin Market Remains Subdued
The cautious sentiment extended across the wider digital asset market. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, saw a marginal gain, while BNB traded flat. XRP was a notable exception, rising 1.1% after its parent company, Ripple, reportedly received regulatory approval for a national trust bank.
Other major altcoins, including Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA), experienced minor declines as market participants await clearer macroeconomic signals from the Federal Reserve and other global central banks.
