Ritual Launches AI-Native Layer 1 Blockchain for Autonomous Agents

Ritual, a research lab focused on autonomous intelligence, has launched Ritual Chain, an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain specifically engineered to support AI agents as persistent economic actors. The network, founded by former Polychain Capital partners Niraj Pant and Akilesh Potti, aims to provide the core infrastructure for software that can independently control capital, interact with services, and operate long-term without direct human intervention.
A New Architecture for AI
Unlike traditional blockchains designed primarily for financial transactions, Ritual Chain integrates AI capabilities directly into its protocol. This allows decentralized applications to natively access AI models, perform private computations, and schedule future actions. The platform is built to support "long-lived" AI agents designed to operate for months or years, a significant departure from session-based AI like chatbots.
According to the project, agents on Ritual Chain can persist independently of their creator, manage funds in their own non-custodial wallets, and keep sensitive data like prompts and private keys confidential. This is achieved through a new architecture that delegates computationally intensive work, such as AI inference, to specialized nodes and then verifies the results on-chain. This "execute-once, verify-many-times" model is designed to support much larger workloads than typical blockchains without requiring every validator to perform the same computation.
Key Features and Market Context
Ritual Chain launches with a set of distinct technical features and established partnerships. The project reports its public testnet, live since June, has already processed over 40 million transactions.
Ad- Performance: The network boasts sub-300 millisecond block times, positioning it among the fastest Layer 1 protocols.
- Native Functions: It includes 15 native precompiles that bring capabilities like LLM inference, web access, and autonomous scheduling directly into the execution layer.
- Economic Autonomy: Agents can control their own funds and settle transactions without a human signer, enabling them to price their own services and manage a treasury.
- Privacy: Through integrations like Phala Network, the chain uses GPU-backed trusted execution environments to shield an agent's data from node operators.
“As we move toward AGI, intelligence is beginning to separate from human agency and enter the economy on its own terms," said Niraj Pant, co-founder of Ritual. "Ritual provides the infrastructure for those actors to exist and operate on their own.”
Backing and Ecosystem
Ritual has raised over $30 million in funding from notable crypto-native investors, including Archetype and Polychain Capital. The project is also advised by prominent industry figures such as NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin and BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes.
“Programmable value and programmable intelligence are the two most important technologies since the internet, and Ritual mainnet is where they finally run on the same rails," said Ash Egan, Founder and General Partner at Archetype. The network launches with key infrastructure partners in place, including cross-chain messaging protocol LayerZero and its partner Stargate, which will enable USDC to move to and from Ritual Chain at launch.
