Background

Gold prices held steady above the $4,000 per ounce mark in Wednesday's trading, buoyed by bargain hunters entering the market. Investors are weighing a mix of factors, including falling oil prices and renewed interest in artificial intelligence stocks, ahead of a pivotal interest rate decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

As of 8:46 PM ET, spot gold was largely unchanged at $4,061.96 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures edged slightly higher to $4,075.80, according to Investing.com data. Other precious metals were mixed, with spot silver flat at $54.4065 an ounce and platinum dipping 0.1% to $1,542.63.

Support Factors and Market Headwinds

Gold's stability follows a 1.1% gain in the previous session. The metal has found a floor despite recent pressure from a broader sell-off in AI-related equities, where some investors reportedly sold gold to cover losses in other positions. Gold fell to its lowest level since mid-July last Friday but has since recovered.

Analysts note that physical buyers and investors looking for dips have consistently stepped in when prices have fallen below the $4,000 threshold, limiting further declines. According to an analysis by ANZ, demand from Chinese households has also provided significant support over the past two months, as investors there turned to gold amid a less appealing domestic stock market.

Fed Policy and Inflation in Focus

Market participants are now squarely focused on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement on Wednesday. The consensus expectation is for the central bank to hold interest rates steady, a scenario that is typically supportive for non-yielding assets like gold.

However, traders remain watchful for a potential rate hike later in the year, as elevated energy costs continue to exert upward pressure on inflation. The market will closely scrutinize the Fed's policy statement and any forward-looking guidance for clues on its trajectory beyond the October meeting.

Further direction will likely come from Thursday's release of the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for September. As the Fed's preferred measure of inflation, the PCE report will be critical in shaping market expectations for a potential rate move at the December policy meeting.
