Standard Chartered Boosts 2026 Outlook After Q3 Profit Surges 27%

Standard Chartered PLC on Wednesday reported a 27% jump in third-quarter pretax profit that handily beat market forecasts, prompting the bank to raise its full-year performance targets. The strong results were driven by robust client activity in its wealth management and global markets divisions amid volatile market conditions.
Quarterly Performance Exceeds Forecasts
The Asia- and Africa-focused lender posted a statutory pretax profit of $2.25 billion for the July-September period, up from $1.77 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. The figure significantly outpaced the $1.99 billion average estimate from 16 analysts compiled by the bank.
Standard Chartered attributed the strong performance to its wealth and global markets units. The bank's wealth management division, in particular, delivered a third consecutive record quarter, with income rising 26% year-over-year, supported by broad-based momentum across its products and geographies.
Upgraded Full-Year Guidance
AdFollowing the strong quarterly results, the bank expressed increased confidence in its full-year outlook for 2026, upgrading two key performance metrics:
- Income Growth: Now expected to be above 7%, an increase from the previous forecast of being in the middle of a 5-7% range.
- Return on Tangible Equity (RoTE): The target for this key profitability gauge was lifted to above 14%, up from an earlier forecast of exceeding 12%.
For investors, the upgraded guidance signals that management sees the current business momentum as sustainable. The bank's ability to capitalize on market volatility and grow its wealth management franchise is translating into improved profitability and shareholder returns.
