Zhenshiming Recalls 10 Batches of Eye Drops Citing Potential Transport Issues

Zhenshiming (Jiangxi) Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a major Chinese eye care brand, has recalled 10 batches of its Tobramycin and Dexamethasone Eye Drops after they failed to meet regulatory standards. The action follows a notice from China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) identifying non-compliance issues related to the product's **"appearance" and "particle size."
Company Points to Supply Chain Lapses
In an online media briefing on September 6, Zhenshiming stated that its preliminary investigation suggests the quality issues may be linked to the supply chain. The company believes the problems could have been caused by exposure to low temperatures and improper handling, specifically the products not being stored in an upright position during transport.
Zhenshiming confirmed it had already halted production of the drug on April 10 and initiated a full recall. The company stated that all affected products have been removed from the market and that production will not resume until the root cause is fully investigated and corrective measures are implemented.
Storage Instructions and Logistics Scrutinized
The incident has brought attention to the specific storage requirements for pharmaceutical products. According to Chinese media reports, the packaging for the recalled Zhenshiming product did not specify a requirement for upright storage, unlike some competing brands of the same medication.
AdZhenshiming's internal tests on recalled products reportedly found that samples stored upright met quality standards, while 7 out of 12 improperly placed samples failed the appearance test. This finding has intensified scrutiny on the logistics of drug distribution, especially in the context of growing e-commerce and on-demand delivery.
Broader Implications for Drug Delivery
Logistics experts note that while bulk shipments in cartons are typically marked with clear handling instructions, ensuring compliance during "last-mile" delivery to consumers is more challenging. The incident underscores the responsibility of pharmaceutical companies and retailers to manage the entire distribution process to ensure product quality and safety, as mandated by regulations like China's Administrative Measures for the Supervision of Online Drug Sales.
While the company's investigation is ongoing, the recall serves as a case study on the critical importance of maintaining strict temperature and handling protocols throughout the entire pharmaceutical supply chain, from the factory to the end consumer.
