UBS Maintains Neutral Stance on Japanese Yen Amid Fed-BoJ Policy Split

Background

UBS is maintaining a neutral stance on the Japanese yen, arguing that recent foreign exchange interventions have provided only temporary support for the currency. The bank stated that the fundamental upward pressure on the U.S. dollar against the yen remains intact due to the significant policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan.

Persistent Policy Divergence

According to a note from UBS, the primary driver of the yen's trajectory is the contrast between the U.S. Federal Reserve's hawkish monetary policy and the Bank of Japan's gradual pace of tightening. This policy gap continues to favor the dollar, and the bank believes recent joint interventions have not altered this underlying dynamic.

For the USD/JPY exchange rate to experience a sustained downturn, UBS outlined two necessary conditions:

  • Softer U.S. economic data that would give the Federal Reserve reason to pivot toward a more accommodative, or looser, monetary policy.
  • More aggressive policy action from the Bank of Japan to rebuild market confidence in the stability of the yen.

Forecast and Market Outlook

Without these conditions being met, UBS expects the USD/JPY pair to continue trading within a high range. The bank's analysts project that the exchange rate will climb to 160 by the end of 2026.

Looking further ahead, UBS forecasts the USD/JPY pair will then ease slightly, falling back to 158 by the middle of 2027. This long-term outlook suggests that significant yen appreciation is unlikely in the near future without a major shift in central bank policy.
