Standard Chartered: Uncertainty Over Strategy's Bitcoin Pivot Weighs on Crypto Market
Text size
Background

Uncertainty surrounding a shift in how the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), manages its vast holdings is creating near-term price volatility for the cryptocurrency, according to a recent note from Standard Chartered. The bank's analyst stated that clearer communication from the company is needed to remove a price "overhang" on the market.

A Shift in Corporate Strategy

Standard Chartered analyst Geoff Kendrick noted that Strategy appears to be moving away from its long-held "'never sell Bitcoin' mantra to a more complex approach." The firm is the largest corporate holder of the asset, with 843,775 coins, representing more than 4% of the maximum possible supply of 21 million Bitcoin.

The pivot was reportedly driven by a decline in the company's mNAV metric, which measures its enterprise value relative to its Bitcoin holdings. With this ratio falling to around 1.0, the previous model of issuing shares to acquire more Bitcoin has become less effective. According to the note, Strategy is now shifting toward using its Bitcoin holdings as collateral for its preferred stock (ticker: STRC).

Market Impact and Outlook

The ambiguity of this new approach has created concern among investors about the possibility of large-scale selling, weighing on Bitcoin's recent price performance. However, Kendrick described this price weakness as "mostly noise rather than a signal of BTC's medium-term direction."

Standard Chartered believes effective communication from Strategy is key to reassuring markets that "wholesale selling is unlikely." If successful, this signaling could remove the need for the company to sell any of its Bitcoin holdings, thereby alleviating the downward pressure on the asset's price.

Price Forecasts Maintained

Despite the short-term uncertainty, Standard Chartered reiterated its bullish long-term view on the cryptocurrency. The bank is maintaining its year-end 2026 Bitcoin price forecast of $100,000.

Kendrick also commented on Strategy's preferred stock, STRC, which has approximately $10 billion in notional value outstanding. He stated that the stock is "heavily over-collateralised and should therefore trade back to $100" from its current level of around $90.
