Morgan Stanley Upgrades Synopsys to Overweight, Trims Targets on European Chip Stocks

Morgan Stanley upgraded shares of Synopsys to Overweight, citing an attractive valuation and confidence in its pending Ansys acquisition, while simultaneously adopting a more selective stance on European semiconductor stocks as the memory cycle approaches an inflection point.
Rationale for Synopsys Upgrade
In a note to clients, Morgan Stanley analyst Lee Simpson pointed to several factors driving the Synopsys (SNPS) upgrade. The firm sees an attractive entry point for the stock following a recent de-rating and expressed "greater confidence" in synergies from the Ansys deal. A recovery in design intellectual property and an "underappreciated opportunity" from physical AI also contributed to the more positive outlook.
Morgan Stanley maintained its $500 price target on Synopsys, based on a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 30 to 35 times.
A More Selective Stance
While the firm remains broadly constructive on the semiconductor sector due to strong AI demand and a cyclical recovery, it is becoming more discerning. "With memory approaching an inflection, we turn more selective," Simpson wrote, pointing to widening valuation dispersion among stocks.
AdThis strategic shift prompted several rating and target price adjustments for European companies:
- Infineon (IFXGn): Downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight, with its price target cut to €65 from €81. The bank sees limited near-term upside and no clear catalyst for the German chipmaker.
- ASML: The Overweight rating was maintained, but the price target was trimmed to €1,700 from €1,930, reflecting near-term overhangs related to China, capacity, and margins.
- Besi (BESI): The price target was lowered to €220 from €260, as the bank now expects hybrid bonding technology for high-bandwidth memory to feature later and at lower volumes.
Market Context and Risks
The ratings changes come after a period of high volatility for the sector. According to the note, Morgan Stanley's coverage universe had gained about 70% for the year before retreating significantly from its June peaks.
Looking toward the end of the year, the firm identified potential risks for the industry, including a possible shortfall in data center construction and a more challenging macroeconomic backdrop.
