Mercedes-Benz CEO Calls Intense China Competition a 'New Reality' Amid Sales Slump

Summary
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius warned that fierce price competition from Chinese automakers will persist for years, following a 30% second-quarter sales decline for the German luxury brand in the critical market.
Mercedes-Benz Group AG's Chief Executive Officer, Ola Källenius, has characterized the intense pricing competition in China's automotive market as a long-term challenge, calling it a "new reality" for the industry. The warning comes as the German automaker grapples with a significant downturn in the world's largest car market.
Competitive Headwinds
Speaking to reporters at an event near Helsinki, Finland, Källenius noted that Chinese brands are investing an "enormous amount of money" to challenge established players in the luxury segment, including Mercedes' flagship S-Class and G-Wagon models. "That competitive intensity in China — I don't believe it's going to go away anytime soon," he said, according to Investing.com.
This heightened competition is driven by local manufacturers, led by BYD Co., which have rapidly gained control of the electric vehicle market through aggressive pricing and frequent new model launches. The pressure has been compounded by a contraction in China's luxury market, linked to a property crisis that has dampened consumer appetite for high-value purchases.
Sales Impact and Company Response
Mercedes-Benz recently reported a 30% drop in its second-quarter sales in China, a decline Källenius described as similar to the slump in the country's overall market. In response, the company has announced further cost-cutting measures, with a particular focus on its operations in Germany. Other German luxury brands, including Porsche AG, BMW AG, and Volkswagen AG's Audi, have also seen sales decline and are undergoing restructuring to improve efficiency.
AdDespite the challenges, Källenius asserted that Mercedes still "dominates" the top-end performance segment, which includes its AMG models. He stated the company is managing its pricing strategy in China "as carefully and financially sound as we can."
Strategic Product Launches
Källenius's comments were made during the presentation of the new GLA, a compact SUV intended to bolster sales in the lower tier of the company's lineup. Mercedes plans to offer the new model with multiple drivetrains, including a fully electric version with a range of up to 657 kilometers.
Orders for the new GLA are set to open in Germany on Thursday, with prices starting at approximately €48,600. The launch highlights the automaker's strategy of refreshing its portfolio to compete across different market segments.
