Kyndryl Stock Surges Over 30% as Turnaround Strategy Yields Results

Shares of Kyndryl Holdings Inc. (NYSE:KD), the IT infrastructure services firm spun off from IBM in 2021, have surged nearly 32% over the past month. The rally reflects growing investor confidence in a multi-year turnaround strategy focused on improving profitability by shifting away from low-margin legacy business.
Strategic Overhaul Gains Traction
Since its separation from IBM, Kyndryl's management has systematically overhauled its business model. The company has been actively exiting unprofitable or low-margin contracts, a move that has begun to positively impact its financial profile. This strategic shift is most evident in its cloud and consulting divisions.
Key elements of the company's turnaround include:
- Building a Cloud Business: Kyndryl has established a $2 billion annual revenue stream from its partnerships with major cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, up from zero at the time of the spinoff.
- Reducing Legacy Exposure: The company has cut its exposure to lower-margin IBM hardware reselling from $4 billion annually to under $2 billion.
- Consulting Growth: Its Kyndryl Consult division reported a 50% year-over-year increase in advisory signings in the most recent quarter, according to Investing.com.
- Operational Efficiency: Kyndryl has deployed approximately 1,800 proprietary AI agents, generating a reported $1 billion in cumulative operational savings.
Divergent Views on Valuation
AdDespite the recent stock price appreciation, Kyndryl's valuation remains a point of debate. The stock trades at approximately 6.8 times forward earnings and 0.19 times sales, metrics that suggest it is still valued conservatively compared to many tech peers. This has attracted the attention of some quantitative investment models.
Financial analysis platform InvestingPro, aggregating six valuation models, calculated an intrinsic fair value of $19.14 per share, implying a potential upside of over 28% from its recent price of around $14.86. In contrast, Wall Street analysts have maintained a more cautious stance, with a median price target of $14.20, reflecting concerns about top-line revenue pressures as the company continues to prune its legacy contracts.
From Spinoff to Cash Flow Generator
Initially dismissed by many market participants as a stagnant legacy business, Kyndryl is now showing signs of a significant operational inflection. The company's strategy prioritizes higher-margin, recurring cloud bookings to replace the revenue from shed contracts.
Looking ahead, management projects these efficiency gains and strategic shifts will help lift the company's free cash flow to $1 billion by 2028. This focus on cash flow generation is central to its transformation from a neglected corporate spinoff into a more streamlined and profitable enterprise services provider.
