Petrobras CEO Dismisses Post-Election Stock Plunge as 'Speculative'

Petrobras Chief Executive Magda Chambriard on Monday characterized the sharp sell-off in the company's shares as a "speculative move" that does not reflect its underlying financial health. The decline followed the reelection of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over the weekend.
CEO Defends Company Fundamentals
In an interview, Chambriard stated that the Brazilian state-run oil company will not be guided by short-term market volatility. She emphasized that Petrobras remains a solid firm with a strong investment pipeline.
"It’s a pity I can’t buy Petrobras shares, this is a good time for anyone who wants to," Chambriard said, according to Investing.com. Her comments appear aimed at reassuring investors concerned about potential government intervention following the election result.
AdMarket Reacts to Lula's Victory
Sao Paulo-traded shares of Petrobras tumbled by approximately 10% after the election results were confirmed. The drop came after the leftist incumbent, President Lula, defeated right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff election.
The victory secures a fourth non-consecutive term for Lula. Historically, investors have shown concern that left-leaning administrations may use state-controlled companies like Petrobras to implement social policies, potentially at the expense of shareholder returns, which can lead to market jitters following such election outcomes.
