HSBC Names 5 Top Utility Stocks to Capitalize on AI-Driven Power Demand

HSBC has identified five U.S. utility stocks as preferred picks, rating each as a Buy based on their potential to capitalize on surging electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence. The investment bank's analysis highlights that these companies exhibit above-average growth prospects and strong execution capabilities in a rapidly evolving power market.
The AI Power Surge
The utilities sector is undergoing a significant transformation as the build-out of AI infrastructure accelerates electricity consumption, according to HSBC. The bank noted that its selected companies are poised for rate base growth well above historical averages, with some projecting regional demand increases of 40% to 80% by 2030.
This trend is creating substantial investment opportunities for utilities that can effectively manage large-scale capital projects and navigate the regulatory environment. HSBC's selections include a mix of integrated electric utilities, transmission operators, and diversified energy companies across key U.S. markets.
HSBC's Preferred Picks
HSBC's analysis provided specific price targets and growth forecasts for its five recommended stocks:
Ad- Entergy (ETR): Rated Buy with a $123.50 price target (17.5% upside). HSBC forecasts 16% rate base growth and 13% EPS growth for 2026-30, driven by a projected 60% demand increase in Louisiana.
- Pinnacle West (PNW): Rated Buy with a $119.50 price target (15.5% upside). The bank projects 12% rate base growth and 13% EPS growth for 2026-30, with demand in its Arizona market seen rising 45% by 2030.
- NextEra (NEE): Rated Buy with a $103.00 price target (29.1% upside). HSBC highlights the company's scale and technology leadership, forecasting 10% EPS growth from 2026-32.
- NiSource (NI): Rated Buy with a $49.50 price target (16.0% upside). The firm forecasts 11% rate base growth and 10% EPS growth for 2026-30, supported by a 9 GW pipeline for large-load customers.
- Sempra (SRE): Rated Buy with a $97.50 price target (16.9% upside). Growth is led by its Texas operations, where HSBC sees an 18% rate base growth for 2026-30 and a load increase of 48% by 2030.
What It Means for Investors
The report underscores a major investment theme in what is traditionally viewed as a conservative sector. HSBC's selections point to companies it believes are best positioned to translate the AI-driven demand boom into significant earnings and rate base expansion.
While the growth opportunities are substantial, the bank also noted varying levels of execution risk. For example, it cited Pinnacle West's risk as "medium to high" due to past regulatory challenges, though it expects material improvements. In contrast, Entergy and NiSource were viewed as having low execution risk, reflecting confidence in their project management and strategic planning.
