Background

Nanobiotix (NASDAQ: NBTX) shares climbed on Monday after the biotechnology company released final data from a Phase 1 study showing its drug candidate, JNJ-1900, demonstrated a significant response rate in patients with advanced melanoma resistant to prior immunotherapies. The results were presented on Saturday at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in Madrid, Spain.

Promising Efficacy in Difficult-to-Treat Patients

The study evaluated JNJ-1900 (also known as NBTXR3) combined with an immune checkpoint inhibitor in 24 heavily pre-treated patients whose cancer had progressed after anti-PD-1 therapy. According to the data, the treatment regimen achieved an overall response rate (ORR) of 41.7%.

Key efficacy results from the trial include:

  • A disease control rate (DCR) of 75%.
  • A median overall survival of 17.8 months.
  • A median progression-free survival of 6.9 months.
  • Four patients achieved a complete response.

Patients received a one-time intratumoral injection of JNJ-1900, followed by stereotactic body radiotherapy to the injected lesion and an anti-PD-1 therapy (nivolumab or pembrolizumab). The treatment elicited responses in both injected lesions (45.8% response rate) and non-injected lesions (30% response rate), suggesting the therapy may stimulate a systemic, body-wide anti-tumor immune response.

For investors, these results provide early validation of the drug's mechanism in a patient population with limited options. The company also reported an acceptable safety profile with no new safety signals observed, a crucial factor for advancing to later-stage clinical trials.

Market Reaction and Partnership Context

Following the data release, shares of Nanobiotix rose 6.3% in Monday's trading. The positive results support the ongoing development of JNJ-1900, which is being conducted under a 2023 license agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. This major partnership provides significant validation and financial backing for the asset, a key consideration for the company's long-term outlook.
