Background

JPMorgan initiated coverage of the recently spun-off FedEx Freight with an Overweight rating, setting a December 2027 price target of $160 per share. In a note to clients Tuesday, the bank argued that operating as a standalone company will unlock value for North America's largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier.

The Case for Independence

According to JPMorgan analyst Brian Ossenbeck, the freight business was previously constrained as a smaller division within the global air cargo giant FedEx, leading to a loss of market share over time. The separation now allows FedEx Freight's management to make necessary investments to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.

"There is no quick fix for Freight as it will take time to ramp up a dedicated salesforce and transition from legacy systems," Ossenbeck wrote. However, the analyst expressed confidence that management can narrow the performance gap with its pure-play LTL peers.

A 'Fixable' Path to Improvement

JPMorgan characterized the company's historical service issues as "fixable, not structural." The note highlighted that FedEx Freight has been ranked as an "Inferior" offering on the Mastio Value Map for four consecutive years, attributing this to back-office and commercial challenges rather than fundamental operational performance.

To address these shortfalls, the company is expected to implement several key upgrades:

  • A new pricing platform
  • A dedicated company website
  • In-house billing systems

These initiatives are anticipated to support improved yields and help the carrier regain market share over the long term, according to the note.

Valuation and Financial Outlook

JPMorgan's model accounts for near-term headwinds, forecasting incremental standalone costs of approximately $100 million in 2026, rising to roughly $150 million in 2027. These costs are primarily driven by transition fees and technology spending, which are expected to begin easing in the second half of 2027.

The bank's $160 price target is based on a projected 2028 earnings per share of $6.20 and a price-to-earnings multiple of 26 times. This valuation represents a discount to peers such as Old Dominion, XPO, and Saia, a gap JPMorgan expects will narrow as FedEx Freight executes its turnaround strategy.
