Intellia Stock Surges After FDA Grants Priority Review for CRISPR-Based HAE Therapy

Shares of Intellia Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NTLA) surged 8% on Tuesday after the biotechnology company announced a key regulatory milestone. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted its Biologics License Application (BLA) for lonvoguran ziclumeran (lonvo-z), granting it a Priority Review for the treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE).
Regulatory Milestone and Market Impact
The FDA has set a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) target action date of March 10, 2027, for its review decision. The Priority Review designation shortens the standard review timeline, signaling the agency's belief that the drug, if approved, would represent a significant improvement in the treatment of a serious condition.
Notably, Intellia stated that the FDA does not currently plan to hold an advisory committee meeting to discuss the application. This is often viewed by investors as a positive indicator, suggesting the clinical data submitted is clear and robust.
A Potential First-in-Class Therapy
If approved, lonvo-z would be a landmark achievement in genetic medicine. It is positioned to become the world's first approved in vivo CRISPR-based therapy, where gene editing occurs directly inside the body. It would also be the only one-time treatment for HAE, a rare and potentially life-threatening genetic disorder that causes severe swelling.
AdStrong Phase 3 Clinical Data
The BLA is supported by positive results from the Phase 3 HAELO clinical trial, which enrolled 80 patients. The study met its primary and all key secondary endpoints, demonstrating the efficacy and safety of a single 50 milligram dose of lonvo-z in adults and adolescents.
Key efficacy findings from the trial include:
- An 87% reduction in the average number of monthly HAE attacks compared to placebo during the primary evaluation period.
- 62% of patients treated with lonvo-z were completely attack-free for a six-month period, compared with just 11% in the placebo group.
The most common adverse events reported in the lonvo-z arm were mild or moderate infusion-related reactions, headache, and fatigue. According to the company, no serious adverse events were observed in patients receiving the therapy.
