Goldman Sachs Reaffirms $5,400 Gold Forecast for 2027, Shrugging Off Fed Hikes

Summary

Goldman Sachs is maintaining its long-term bullish outlook on gold, forecasting a price of $5,400 per ounce by late 2027, arguing that strong central bank buying will outweigh near-term headwinds from Federal Reserve rate increases.

Background

Goldman Sachs is advising clients to stand by the gold trade, arguing that the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes should slow the metal's rally rather than completely derail it. In a report, the investment bank maintained its long-term forecast for gold to reach $5,400 per ounce by the end of 2027, citing powerful structural drivers that are expected to overcome near-term monetary policy pressures.

Near-Term Caution, Long-Term Conviction

In a research note published on September 18 following the Fed's September 16 policy decision, Goldman Sachs analysts acknowledged the challenging environment for gold. The bank's economists now anticipate another rate hike in October, which traditionally strengthens the dollar and bond yields, making non-yielding assets like gold less attractive.

Reflecting this outlook, analyst Lina Thomas revised the firm's year-end 2026 fair value estimate for gold down to $4,650 per ounce from a previous $4,900. However, this revised target remains significantly above recent spot prices of around $4,350 per ounce. Thomas noted that much of the tightening cycle's impact has already been priced in by exchange-traded fund (ETF) demand, while the long-term bullish thesis remains intact.

Central Bank Buying is the Key Driver

The cornerstone of Goldman's bullish argument is the unprecedented level of purchasing by global central banks. The report highlights that this structural demand is far more significant than short-term fluctuations in interest rate expectations.

Key points on central bank activity include:

  • Current purchases are running at approximately 91 tons per month, a stark increase from the pre-2022 monthly average of just 17 tons.
  • Goldman attributes almost the entirety of its projected 23% price gain through the end of 2027 to this single factor.
  • The People's Bank of China has been a notably consistent buyer, extending its purchasing streak to 22 consecutive months as of August, as part of a broader emerging market trend toward reserve diversification.

The 'Debasement Trade' and Market Risks

Beyond central banks, Goldman also points to a persistent "debasement trade," where high-net-worth individuals and institutions buy physical gold. This strategy serves as a hedge against concerns over long-term government debt levels and the potential erosion of monetary policy credibility. The bank views these as structural, long-term positions unlikely to be unwound by short-term rate moves.

Despite the bullish outlook, the report acknowledges downside risks. Thomas warned that a "more hawkish policy path from the Fed could trigger a sharper market adjustment" than previously seen. For investors, Goldman suggests focusing on Fed policy signals, official central bank buying data, and the durability of the debasement trade as key indicators for the path ahead.
