Background

The recent geopolitical conflict involving Iran has caused a sharp divergence in European energy stock performance, creating significant buying opportunities in companies that have been unfairly punished by the market, according to a new analysis from investment bank Jefferies.

Since the conflict began in late February, investors have rewarded companies perceived as direct beneficiaries of higher oil and gas prices, while several major firms have lagged despite having limited operational exposure to the region.

Market Winners and Losers

Jefferies noted that the sector's performance has split between companies with justifiably improving earnings and those that appear oversold. The brokerage highlighted several outperformers whose gains are linked to specific fundamental drivers:

  • Neste Oyj has rallied 33%, boosted by stronger diesel prices and supportive renewable fuel regulations.
  • Repsol has gained 17%, with Jefferies citing the potential for an upgraded share buyback program and improving opportunities in Venezuela.
  • Equinor ASA climbed 13%, supported by firmer European gas prices and a clearer strategic outlook.

Other notable gainers included Vår Energi, up 15% on expectations of extraordinary dividends, and Tullow Oil, which rose 11% after a successful refinancing.

In contrast, Jefferies argued that several heavyweight energy names have lagged the market and now represent compelling opportunities. The bank identified several companies as "oversold" based on their resilient fundamentals.

Among integrated oil companies, Shell PLC was named a preferred opportunity. Jefferies noted its acquisition of ARC Resources assets extends reserve life and strengthens the case for a final investment decision on its Canada LNG project. TotalEnergies SE was also described as oversold, with its diversified portfolio helping to offset Middle East risks.

Within the exploration and production space, the bank said stocks including Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, and Kosmos Energy look attractive due to improving balance sheets and strategic progress. Jefferies also highlighted underperformance in oilfield service companies like Maire, Technip Energies, and TechnipFMC, which have healthy order pipelines and could benefit from future regional reconstruction spending.

Investor Debate on Geopolitical Premium

According to Jefferies, the wide dispersion in stock performance reflects a market debate over which companies deserve to trade at a geopolitical premium. The bank's analysis suggests that investors have unfairly penalized some firms with strong underlying businesses.

This dynamic has created selective buying opportunities across the European energy sector for investors who can look past the immediate geopolitical noise and focus on company-specific fundamentals, the brokerage concluded.
