Background

A four-year-old Chinese footwear brand, PANE, is generating significant buzz in the domestic market, with its retro-style sneakers commanding long lines and creating a secondary market for professional line-standers. According to a report from Time Finance, the demand has led to widespread stock shortages and lengthy wait times for popular models, signaling a calculated push into China's premium consumer segment.

Hype and Scarcity Drive Demand

The popularity of PANE's footwear has resulted in queues of two hours or more at new store openings, such as its first location in Shenyang. This has attracted scalpers and line-standing services who charge fees to wait for customers.

  • Line-standing fees are reportedly 50 RMB (approx. $7) per hour per person or a flat rate of 100 RMB (approx. $14) per trip.
  • The brand's core products, German Army Trainer (GAT) style shoes, are priced between 800-980 RMB (approx. $110-$135).
  • Popular models are frequently sold out, with customers facing pre-order waits of two to three weeks, and some online platforms showing wait times as long as 60 days.

A Premium Market Strategy

PANE, founded in Shanghai in 2022, is deliberately positioning itself among high-end, middle-class consumer brands. Its new store in Shenyang's MixC mall is located on a floor featuring premium international labels like Descente, Wilson, Arc'teryx, and On, according to Time Finance. This retail strategy aims to build brand prestige by association.

Instead of traditional sports marketing, PANE employs a strategy more akin to a designer label, relying on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu for targeted marketing, features in fashion media, and endorsements from celebrities. The brand's founder, Chen Ning, previously established a high-end bespoke suit brand, Full Monty, which has catered to numerous Chinese entertainers.

Global Ambitions and Potential Headwinds

The brand has already laid groundwork for international expansion, launching overseas social media accounts in 2023 and utilizing foreign influencers. PANE's Shanghai stores report that foreign customers now account for approximately 35% of sales. Chen Ning stated in an interview cited by Time Finance that the company plans to open a store in Thailand and later establish showrooms in Europe and the Americas.

Despite the current hype, the brand faces challenges. Some consumers have criticized the shoes for being uncomfortable, with one describing them as having a hard, thin sole, according to the report. Cheng Weixiong, a footwear industry brand strategy expert, told Time Finance that PANE's long-term success will depend on its ability to transition from a hype-driven, single-product model to a sustainable business focused on product quality, channel management, and customer retention.
