BofA Forecasts Just 2% S&P 500 Upside Over Next 12 Months, Citing Pullback Risk

Bank of America has established a muted outlook for U.S. equities, initiating a 12-month price target for the S&P 500 of 7,800, which implies just 2% upside from current levels. In a note released Monday, the bank also warned that investors may soon see a better entry point, as its revised year-end 2026 target suggests a near-term decline.
Near-Term Caution Advised
BofA strategist Savita Subramanian raised the firm's year-end 2026 target for the S&P 500 to 7,400 from a previous 7,100. However, this new target now indicates a potential 3% downside from the index's current standing. Subramanian noted the market is overdue for a pullback, observing that there has been only one 5% drop this year, compared to an average of three in a typical year.
According to the note, about half of the firm's proprietary bear-market indicators have been triggered. "Our 12-month target of 7800 is nothing to write home about," Subramanian wrote, suggesting limited returns for the benchmark index over the coming year.
Key Risks on the Horizon
The bank flagged several macroeconomic and market-specific risks that inform its cautious stance, including:
Ad- Persistent inflation and the Federal Reserve's policy response.
- Concerns over earnings quality and corporate credit conditions.
Subramanian warned that current price-to-earnings multiples imply a much lower inflation rate than BofA forecasts. The note also drew a parallel to the 1970s, a period when a combination of rising inflation, U.S. dollar weakness, and Fed rate hikes contributed to a stock market decline of over 40%.
Long-Term Bull Case Remains Intact
Despite the near-term headwinds, BofA stated that its long-term bull case for equities remains intact. The firm's optimism is driven by expected productivity gains as corporations increasingly substitute labor with scalable technology and processes.
BofA is forecasting robust S&P 500 earnings growth of 33% in 2026 and 12% in 2027. In this environment, the bank's strategists favor large-cap value stocks, select small- and mid-cap companies, and the equal-weighted S&P 500 index over its more common market-cap-weighted counterpart.
