Bitcoin's Milder Bear Market Signals Maturing Crypto Sector, Bernstein Says

Bitcoin's recent price correction, which saw the cryptocurrency fall roughly 54% from its cycle peak, has been a milder and “rather comforting” development compared to previous bear markets, according to analysts at Bernstein. The analysis suggests this shallower downturn points to a maturing market structure, even as Bitcoin retested lows near $60,000 before recovering to the $63,000 level.
A Less Severe Drawdown
In a note to clients, Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani highlighted that the current decline from a peak of about $125,000 in November 2025 is notably less severe than historical corrections. Prior crypto cycles have seen drawdowns ranging from 75% to 90%.
"Although it is unclear if we are completely out of the woods... this crypto bear market has been milder than the previous drawdown," the analysts wrote. They concluded that while "any crypto correction is painful, this one has been rather comforting," adding that "crypto feels like it’s growing up."
Shifting Market Dynamics
The report identified several key shifts in the market's composition. While Bitcoin ETFs have experienced $5.5 billion in outflows this year, this has been partially offset by buying from corporate treasuries. The analysts specifically pointed to the firm Strategy (STRC), noting it is unlikely to become a source of forced selling.
AdKey points on market participants include:
- Corporate Treasuries: Strategy maintains 17 months of cash reserves for its obligations, with debt representing just 13% of its Bitcoin collateral value.
- U.S. Miners: Publicly listed Bitcoin miners in the U.S. have become net sellers as they pivot to AI data center operations. Their share of the global hash rate has fallen by over 40 basis points in the last two quarters, with market share shifting to international miners.
Price Target and Regulatory Outlook
Bernstein acknowledged that its year-end Bitcoin price target of $150,000 now "appears ambitious in context of the market correction." However, the firm remains bullish on the broader cycle turning positive in the long term.
On the regulatory front, the analysts noted ongoing rulemaking for stablecoins under the GENIUS Act and the introduction of crypto perpetual futures on U.S. platforms. They view the passage of the broader CLARITY Act this year as a "coin-flip."
