Background

Bitcoin's current bear market, which has seen the cryptocurrency fall approximately 54% from its November 2025 peak of about $125,000, is being viewed by some analysts as a sign of a maturing market. In a recent note, analysts at Bernstein led by Gautam Chhugani described the correction as "rather comforting," highlighting its relative mildness compared to historical downturns.

A Shallower Correction

The key observation from Bernstein is the depth of the current price decline. While Bitcoin has recently retested lows near $60,000, this drawdown is considerably less severe than the corrections of 75% to 90% seen in prior bear markets.

"Although it is unclear if we are completely out of the woods... this crypto bear market has been milder than the previous drawdown," the analysts wrote. They concluded that while "any crypto correction is painful, this one has been rather comforting," adding that it feels like the crypto market is "growing up."

Bernstein's analysis points to a changing landscape of buyers and sellers that is contributing to market stability. While Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen significant outflows of $5.5 billion this year, this has been partially offset by consistent buying from corporate treasury holders like MicroStrategy.

  • Institutional Flows: Bitcoin treasury firms and ETFs have attracted $10 billion in 2026, a notable decrease from $60 billion in the previous year.
  • Corporate Support: The analysts noted that MicroStrategy appears financially stable, with 17 months of cash reserves and debt representing just 13% of its Bitcoin collateral value, making forced selling unlikely.
  • Miner Selling: U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners have become net sellers as they pivot to AI data center operations. This has resulted in their share of the global hash rate falling by over 40 basis points in the last two quarters.

Analyst Outlook

Looking ahead, Bernstein acknowledged that its year-end Bitcoin price target of $150,000 now "appears ambitious in context of the market correction." However, the firm maintains a long-term bullish outlook, expecting the broader cycle to eventually resume its upward trend as the industry continues to institutionalize and navigate an evolving regulatory environment.
