Background

Bitcoin's current bear market, while painful for investors, is significantly less severe than previous downturns, leading analysts at Bernstein to call the correction "rather comforting" and a sign of a maturing market. The digital asset has fallen roughly 54% from its cycle peak, a far cry from the 75% to 90% collapses seen in prior cycles, according to a new analyst note.

A Milder Correction

After reaching a peak of approximately $125,000 in November 2025, Bitcoin has retested lows near $60,000 before a modest recovery. Bernstein analysts, led by Gautam Chhugani, highlighted that this drawdown has been notably shallower than historical precedents.

"Although it is unclear if we are completely out of the woods... this crypto bear market has been milder than the previous drawdown," the analysts wrote. This relative stability suggests a more resilient market structure with less panic-selling compared to past cycles.

Shifting Market Dynamics

A changing investor landscape is contributing to the market's behavior. While institutional inflows have slowed, key structural players are providing support. Bernstein observed several key trends:

  • Slower Inflows: Bitcoin treasury companies and ETFs have attracted $10 billion in 2026, a significant drop from $60 billion the previous year.
  • ETF Outflows: Spot Bitcoin ETFs have registered net outflows of $5.5 billion this year from their $74 billion asset base.

This selling pressure has been partially offset by corporate buyers, most notably MicroStrategy, which "continues to be a net buyer in the market," according to Bernstein. The analysts added that a forced liquidation from the company is unlikely, citing its 17 months of cash reserves and a low debt level representing just 13% of its Bitcoin collateral value.

At the same time, U.S.-listed Bitcoin miners have become net sellers while pivoting to AI data center operations. This shift has caused the U.S. share of the global hash rate to fall by over 40 basis points in the last two quarters.

Regulatory and Price Outlook

The market continues to watch for regulatory clarity in the U.S., including rulemaking on stablecoins under the GENIUS Act and the rollout of crypto perpetual futures. Bernstein analysts see the passage of the broader CLARITY Act as a "coin-flip" this year.

Bernstein acknowledged that its $150,000 year-end Bitcoin price target "appears ambitious in context of the market correction" but maintained a long-term bullish view on the overall cycle. The analysts concluded that while "any crypto correction is painful, this one has been rather comforting," adding that "crypto feels like it’s growing up."
